Part 5: CFD Software Comparison Part 5; Software User Survey Results
And the survey says……………
Well we made it; over 200 hours of research into and 20,000 words written about the world’s leading CFD software packages. We hope you have enjoyed the series and learned a few things along the way. If you are just joining us, all four previous posts can be accessed at the bottom of the page.
One thing is clear from survey results, the world of CFD is diverse and the pace of change is rapid.
For as long as commercial CFD has been around, software OEMs have been developing new technologies and business models to satisfy evolving buyer demographics and new, demanding application requirements. And the pace of change only seems to be accelerating in the past few years.
As evidence, take a look at the results from our CFD User Software Survey. 624 CFD software users responded to our survey request providing information on how they use CFD. For us, perhaps the most surprising finding was just how pervasive multiphysics simulations have become. These are simulations that have only become feasible in the past 10 years or so. For example, one third of respondents reported experience in simulating open surface flows using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method. The VOF method has only been available in the most cutting edge CFD programs for around 15 years, and only viable for solving real world engineering problems for probably less than 10! For comparison, electric vehicles became available and viable at around the same times and now account for ~2% of the US market.
